In the early 19th century, in New Orleans during the final years of the transatlantic slave trade (1790-1860), enslaved women would gather a rare cotton flower from a small plantation at the break of dawn. This flower, with its enchanting scent, would permeate their hands and clothing, transforming them into symbols of beauty and desire.

The unique aroma of this flower caught the attention of plantation owners and influential members of society. Recognizing the exceptional value of their work and the flower, the enslaved women of this plantation were freed from their condition. Their liberty was thus symbolically gained through the acknowledgment of their precious contribution.
